Tim wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company's party..

Tim is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all.

He didn't even remember how he got home from the party.

As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong..

Tim had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table.

And, next to them, a single red rose!! Tim sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed.

He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror.

Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: 'Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Gloria

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper.

His 16 year old son is also at the table eating. Tim asks, 'Son, what happened last night?'

'Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind you fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door'.

Confused, he asked his son, 'So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??'

His son replies, 'Oh THAT... Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, 'Leave me alone bitch, I'm married!!'

A family festival, it is celebrated 20 days after Dussehra, on the 13th day of the dark Fortnight of the month of Ashwin (October / November).

Deepawali or Diwali The 14th Day of the dark half of Aashwayuja to the 2nd day of bright half of Kaartik If there is one occasion which is all joy and all jubilation for one and all - the young and the old, men and women for the entire Hindu world, it is Deepaavali - the Festival of Lights. Even the humblest of huts will be lighted by a row of earthern lamps. Crackers resound and light up the earth and the sky. The faces of boys and girls flow with a rare charm in their dazzling hues and colors. Illumination - Deepotsavas - in temples and all sacred places of worship and one the banks of rivers symbolize the scattering of spiritual radiance all round from these holy centres. The radiant sight of everybody adorned with new and bright clothes, especially ladies decorated with the best of ornaments, captures the social mood at its happiest. And all this illumination and fireworks, joy and festivity, is to signify the victory of divine forces over those of wickedness. Narakaasura was a demon king ruling over Praagjyotishapura (the present-day Assam). By virtue of his powers and boons secured from God, he became all-conquering. Power made him swollen-headed and he became a menace to the good and the holy men and even the Gods. The Gods headed by Devendra implored Sri Krishna who was at Dwaaraka (in the present-day Gujarat) to come to their rescue. Sri Krishna responded. He marched from the western end of the country to its eastern end, Praagjyotishapura, destroyed the huge army which opposed him finally beheaded Narakaasura himself. The populace was freed from the oppressive tyranny and all heaved a sigh of relief. The 16,000 women kept in captivity by the demon king were freed. With a view to removing any stigma on them and according social dignity, Sri Krishna gave all of them the status of his wives. After the slaying of Narakaasura Sri Krishna bathed himself smearing his body with oil in the early morning of Chaturdashi. Hence the invigorating vogue of taking an early morning `oil-bath' on that day. Mother Earth, whose son Narakaasura was, requested Sri Krishna that the day be celebrated as one of jubilation. Sri Krishna granted the request and since then the tradition has continued. Mother Earth reconciled herself to the loss of her son and knowing as she did that the Lord had punished her son for the sake of the welfare of the world, she set a glowing example of how one has to brush aside one's personal joys and sorrows in the interest of society. It is this deliverance of the people from the clutches of the asuras that fill the people with joy. Then follows Amaavaasya, the new moon day, auspicious for offering prayers and gratitude to the bygone ancestors of the family and invoking their memories and blessings for treading the path of right conduct. This is also the sacred occasion for the worship of Mahaa Lakshmi, the goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. The business community open their New Year's account with Her worship. This reminds us of the famous saying of the sage Vyaasa, 'dharmaadarthashcha kaamashcha...' - it is through right conduct that wealth and fulfilment of desires also accrue. In northern parts of Bharat, Deepaavali is associated with the return of Sri Rama to Ayodhya after vanquishing Raavana. The people of Ayodhya, overwhelmed with joy, welcomed Rama through jubilation and illumination of the entire capital. Well has it been said that while Sri Rama unified the north and south of our country, Sri Krishna unified the west and the east. Sri Rama and Sri Krishna together therefore symbolize the grand unity of our motherland. The third day, i.e., the first day of Kaartik, is named Balipratipada, after the demon king Bali, the ruler of Paataala (the netherworld), who had extended his kingdom over the earth also. On the day, Sri Vishnnu, taking the form of a dwarfish Brahmin by name Vaamana, approached Bali, for a boon of space equal to his three steps. Bali, known for his charity, gladly granted the boon. Vaamana now grew into a gigantic form; with one step he covered the entire earth, with the second he covered the outer sky, and asked Bali where he should keep his third step. Bali, left with no other choice, showed his own head. Sri Vishnu placed his foot on Bali's head and pushed him down to the netherworld, the rightful territory of Bali's reign. However, Bali prayed to the Lord that he might be permitted to visit the earth once a year. Now it was the turn of Vishnu to grant the boon. And the people too offer their and respect to him on this day. The annual visit of Bali is celebrated in Kerala as Onam. It is the most popular festival for Kerala where every Hindu home receives him with floral decorations and lights and festoons adorn all public places. Onam, however, falls on the 16th day of Aavani (Sowramaana) in september. The pratipada is also the day for Govardhana Pooja and Anna Koota (heap of grains), the former signifying the Govardhana episode in Sri Krishna's life and the latter conveying affluence and prosperity. The fourth and final day is Yama Dwiteeya, also called Bahu beej. It is a most touching moment for the family members when even distant brothers reach their sisters to strengthen that holy tie. The sister applies tilak and waves aarati to her brother, and the brother offers loving presents to the sister. To the Jains, Deepaavali has an added significance to the great event of Mahaaveera attaining the Eternal Bliss of Nirvaana. The passing into Eternity on the same Amaavaasya of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, that leonine sanyasin who was one of the first to light the torch of Hindu Renaissance during the last century, and of Swami Ramatirtha who carried the fragrance of the spiritual message of Hindu Dharma to the western world, have brought the national-cum-spiritual tradition of Deepaavali right up to modern times.

Dussehra (tenth day) is one of the significant Hindu festivals, celebrated with much joie de vivre in the entire country. The occasion marks the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king, Ravana, the victory of good over evil. Brilliantly decorated tableaux and processions depicting various facets of Rama's life are taken out. On the tenth day, the Vijayadasmi day, colossal effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkarna and son Meghnath are placed in vast open spaces. Rama, accompanied by his consort Sita and his brother Lakshmana, arrive and shoot arrows of fire at these effigies, which are stuffed with explosive material. The result is a deafening blast, enhanced by the shouts of merriment and triumph from the spectators.

It is significant that the Lord invoked the blessings of the divine mother, Goddess Durga, before actually going out to battle. In burning the effigies the people are asked to burn the evil within them, and thus follow the path of virtue and goodness, bearing in mind the instance of Ravana, who despite all his might and majesty was destroyed for his evil ways. It must be remembered that Ravana was a great scholar and an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, but the very powers that were bestowed on him for his steadfast devotion proved to be his undoing, due to his gross misuse of the same.

Goddess Durga

The festival is also celebrated with intense fervour and zest, in West Bengal and Bengalis nationwide, in the form of Durga Puja. The festivities commence on the first night in the month of Ashwin (September-October). The vibrant festivities last for ten days, of which nine nights are spent in worship, 'Navaratri'. The tenth day is devoted to the worship of goddess Durga, who occupies a special position in the Hindu pantheon of gods and goddesses. She is 'Shakti', the cosmic energy which animates all beings. Beautiful idols of the Mother Goddess are worshipped in elaborate pandals for nine days, and on the ninth day, these are carried out in procession for immersion (visarjan) in a river or pond.

According to a Puranic legend attached to this day, the mighty demon Mahisasur, vanquished the gods and their king, Indra, who subsequently fled, leaving behind their kingdoms. They then approached the Holy Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who decided to destroy the megalomaniac demon, and thus prayed to the divine mother Durga to do the needful. Equipped with lethal weapons, riding a ferocious lion, the Goddess in all her awesome majesty, vanquished the evil one without much ado. This day, thus, also celebrates the magnificence and omnipotence of Goddess Durga.

Ramlila

In Tamil Nadu, the first three days are dedicated to the worship of Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity, the next three days to Saraswati, Goddess of learning and arts and the last three days to Shakti (Durga). In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, families arrange dolls(Bommai Kolu) on artificially constructed steps and prepare an elaborate spread of lamps and flowers. Women traditionally exchange gifts of coconuts, clothes and sweets. Scenes culled from various stories in the epics and puranas are displayed. Traditionally women and children, and now men too visit their friends and acquaintances during these 10 days. They sing songs, tell stories that the dolls might depict and eat a dish made out of chickpeas (choondal). The whole set up is put up on the very first day of Navaratri. After the Saraswati pooja on the ninth day, the whole set up is taken down on Vijayadashmi. Vijayadashami is an auspicious occasion for children to commence their education in classical dance and music, and to pay homage to their teachers.

In Punjab, Navaratri is taken as a period of fasting. In Gujarat, the evenings and nights are occasions for the fascinating Garba dance. The women dance around an earthen lamp while singing devotional songs accompanied by rhythmic clapping of hands.

In northern India, the festival wears the colourful garb of Ramlila wherein various incidents from Rama's life are enacted, as is the destruction of Ravana and Bharat Milap, that is the reunion of Ram and his estranged brother Bharat, on the former's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. In the Kulu valley in Himachal Pradesh, the hill- folk celebrate Dussehra with a grand mass ceremony wherein village deities are taken out in elaborate processions. The Dussehra of Mysore, is also quite famous where caparisoned elephants lead a colourful procession through the gaily dressed streets of the city.

Like other festivals in the country, Dussehra / Durga Puja is an occasion for festivities on a grand scale, which emanate a genuine feeling of bonhomie and warmth.

This celebration in honor of the goddess, the mother of the world, begins on the first day of Ashvin, and goes on for nine days.
The goddess is the personification of Power, or 'Shakti'.
She is known by many names:
'Kali',
'Laxmi',
'Sarasvati',
'Chandi-ka',
'Durga',
'Bhavani',
'Ambika',
'Ashtabhuja' (eight hands).

Her main task is to punish the wicked. She is engaged in war, and weapons are in her hands (four, eight, eighteen...) She is sitting on a lion. Her weapons are the 'shul' (pike), 'chakra' (wheel), 'parshu' (axe) and 'talvar' (sword).

Kali is known as 'Mahisha-surmardini', the slayer of the demon Mahishasur. The fight against the demon begins on the first day until he is defeated on the ninth day.

Rambh and Karambh

Once upon a time there were two brothers, Rambh and Karambh. They were demons who did a lot of penance. But their intention was evil. So Indra, the king of the gods, stopped their penance. Rambh was standing in the hot sun. Karambh was standing in water. Indra took the form of a crocodile and killed Karambh. Rambh got angry and was about to commit suicide. But �agni dev�, the fire god, appeared to him and offered him a boon. Rambh asked to have a son who should never be defeated by anyone, and who could take any form he wanted. Agni granted the boon and disappeared.

Mahishasur

Rambh married a woman from the Mahish caste (Mahish means buffalo). Their son was named Mahishasur. He had the come to you only by a woman's hand. Here I am. I have come to kill you. If you want to save your life go immediately to hell.The battle started. Mahishasur became a lion, then an el-ephant, a locust and a buffalo. The goddess stood on the buffalo's back, and while Mahishasur was coming out of the buffalo's mouth, the goddess chopped his head with her sword. With the death of Mahishasur all the demons fled to hell.

Shumbha and Nishumbha

According to another story Shumbha and Nishumbha were two demons who had made penance for 10,000 years, and they pleased Brahmadev. Their boon was that they would not die by the hand of men. Of women they were not afraid. Shumbha was king and Nishumbha his prime minister. Chanda and Munda were two generals of the army. One day they came with their army to Shumbha. With them came Dhumralochan of the colour of smoke and soot ('Dhumra' = smoke, 'lochan' = eye), and Raktabij (seed of blood) who was a reincarnation of Mahishasur.
Shumbha and Nishumbha became very strong. They defeated Indra, who with all the other gods escaped from heaven. Bruhaspati, the guru of the gods, suggested that they have recourse to the goddess. All the gods gathered on the Himalayas and began to pray, "O goddess, protect us. Save us from the tyranny of the demons."

Navratra -2

Kalika

At that time the goddess had gone to take bath in the Ganges. She heard their prayers. From her body another goddess was created. She was black and horrible to look at. So she was called 'Kalika'. She smiled and promised to destroy Shumbha and Nishumbha. When King Shumbha heard about the new goddess, he sent her the demon Sugreev with the invitation to become the queen of King Shumbha.
She replied, "I shall marry the one who defeats me in battle. Tell the king to come here and fight with me."
Hearing this Shumbha got angry and sent his general Dhumralochan to the goddess. But the goddess only saying "hum" burnt him to death.

Chamunda
Then the army of the demons came to attack the goddess, but they were put to flight by her lion. Then Chanda and Munda came with their. armies.
As they approached, a new goddess was created from the forehead of Kalika. Of a terrible appearance was she, and she wore a tiger's skin. In her hands she held a sword, a noose and a 'khatvang' (weapon of Shiva) ('Khatva' Khat or baj = a bedstead, a part of it, is called Khatvang = like the foot of the bedstead). The newly created goddess caught Chanda and Munda and kept them bound before Kalika. Then by Kalika's command she made their heads fly. Because she killed Chanda and Munda she is known as 'Chamurtda'.
Shumbha sent another hero demon. His name was Raktabij, because Brahmadev had given him the boon, that when wounded, every drop of his blood falling on the ground would become a new demon.When Kalika saw the number of demons multiplying from Raktabij's blood, she ordered Chamunda to spread her mouth (she had a huge jaw) and swallow every drop of the demon's blood. So Chamunda swallowed each and every drop of blood until Raktabij lost all his blood and died.

Final Battle, Kalika Kills Shumbha
Finally Shumbha and Nishumbha in person reached the battle field. With their army they surrounded the goddess from all sides. Kalika began to fight bitting on her lion, and Chamunda was helping her. The demon's army was very large, and the two brothers were experienced warriors. So all the gods sent all the power at their command to help the goddess.
Bramhadev sent his power Branihani by a plane drawn by a swan. Maheshvari, the power of the great god Shankar came sitting on the bull. The virginal power of Kartikaya came sitting on the peacock. The Vaishnavi power came sitting on the eagle. Aindri power came sitting on the elephant Airavat. They all descended on the demons. They soon killed Nishumbha. Shumbha was furious. He said, "Are you so proud of your power? Then why are you taking the help of all these gods and goddesses? If you dare come and fight me single handed."
Kalika said smiling, "No problem. All these deities are my own nature. If you wish they can all get again immersed in me." As she said this all the powers disappeared in her body, and Kalika was there alone. Then Shumbha lifted her up and flew into the sky. The goddess fought in the sky. There was a fierce fight. At the end the goddess whirling Shumbha around hurled him down from the sky. Shumbha was at last dead. All the demons ran away to hell.

The Novena
The festival of the nine nights is in honour of the goddess, the Divine Power. On the first night the 'ghatsthapana' takes place. A vessel of water called 'kalash' is put before the image of the goddess, while Vedic verses are recited. During nine days the image of the goddess and the 'kalash' must not be touched. This must be accompanied by fasting, or with only one meal a day. An oil lamp must be kept burning throughout. This lamp is called 'nandadip'. Every day a garland of fresh flowers is tied before the goddess. Near the water vessel some mud is spread and grains are sown. The grains sprout during the nine days. On Dasara day the bunch of tender plants is put on the clothes.
During these nine days the holy book 'Saptashati' is read. This book contains the exploits of the goddess. Every day special food is prepared for the goddess. Brahmins, married women and young girls are invited for dinner. At night 'arti' is celebrated with great solemnity. In some places it was customary to offer the sacrifice of either a male buffalo, or a goat or a pig. Many people go daily to visit the temple of the goddess, usually situated on the outskirts of the town or village. Some temples of the goddess are situated on high mountains.
In Bengal, this period is celebrated as Durga Puja.
In Gujarat, this is the time for the joyous Garba and Dandia dances and people pour out at night to participate in this community festival. Women and girls in all their fineries dance around the garb a pot, clapping their hands in rhythmic movement. The pot is decorated with flowers, betel leaves, and has its mouth covered with a cocount.
In Tamil Nadu, the first three days of the festival are dedicated to Lakshmi, the next three to Durga and the last three to Sarasvati.

SLOPES OF PLOTS

Slope, size, shape, direction, proportion, location of openings, sorroundings, etc. of a plot have significant influence both positive and negative, on the inmates of building constructed on it. According to Vastu Shastra the shape of the ground surface also influences the fortune of the occupants. As a rule the plot should be elevated in South and West directions, sloping (declining) towards East and North so that water flows from West to East and from South to North. This type of plot brings joy and happiness, good children and all the success in life to the occupants of the building erected on it. According to Shastras a plot is divided into two parts like this : - - -

The Moon's place that is South Western portion of the plot should be elevated and the Sun's place, that is North and Eastern portion should be at lower level. Such a plot will bring joy and happiness, good children and success in life to that family. On the other hand, if Sun's place is elevated and Moon's place is depressed, the owner and family of that house will become poorer day by day, suffer from diseases and get entangled in quarrels and litigations and lose everything gradually.

The slope towards mid point, that is all sides elevated but mid point depressed means continuously fighting with diseases and losing every thing. If only Southern direction remains high leveled, it will bring bad effects. Sometimes even death will result.

SELECTION OF SITE

Several things need careful consideration while going in for construction of a building. The most important of all these is selecting the right plot or site. Sand and its surroundings bring peace and harmony or pains and sorrows in life. Thus it is always advisible to consult an expert on Vastu Shastra before buying a plot or purchasing a house, flat or other buildings instead of calling him in at a later stage to design the building, do supervision and other work. By the time the damage would have already been done.

FROM WHOM NOT TO BUY A PLOT

According to Vastu Shastra, a plot or site of land should not be purchased :
1) From those who became insolvent
2) From person suffering from leprosy
3) From lunatics
4) From people who have left the country, etc.

Similarly, land donated to temple, alloted to watchman of village or colony, land in possession of charitable trusts, land without any title deed should not be purchased. Land containing boulders, ant hills, worm hills, bones and skeleton etc, should not be acquired.

DIRECTION OF THE PLOT

Plot facing East is good for scholars, philosphers, priests, professors, teachers etc.Plot facing North is good for those in power, administration and those who work for government.Plot facing South is good for business class and for those who work in business organisation.Plot facing West is for those who provide supporting services to the society.

ENVIRONMENT OR SURROUNDINGS OF THE PLOT

This is most important. If the sorrundings are not good, we suffer in many ways.

* Plots which are fertile with plants and greeneries are very good.
* A river or big canal nearby and if it is in North side and water flows from West to East, it is good. Similarly if it is on East side of the plot with water flowing from South to North, that is also good. But plots with rivers or canal flowing on West or South side of the plot should be avoided.
* Hills, hillocks, mounds of Earth, big boulders etc on the Southern, South West and Western sides of the plot is good : in other sides, it will mar the progress.
* There should be no graveyard, cemetry or tomb adjacent to the plot or in front or back.
* Location of temples near the plot also affect the immates. Temple on the right side of a plot cause material loss, on the left, grief and sorrow, in front, obstruction to progress and in the 100 feet apart, those disastrous result are avoided.
* Similarly plot very near to Cinema-theatres, schools and colleages are to be avoided.

OBSTRUCTION IN FRONT OF MAIN GATE OF PLOT

If there are obstructions of the undernoted types before main gate of the plot, following problems will arise as per BRAHUSANHITHA.
1.Big Tree-obstruction to the progress of children,
2.Gutter or Ditch-grief,
3.Open well- mental problem,
4.Corner of another building-mental unrest,
5.Water drain-draining of income by unwanted expenses,
6.Straight street-affecting longivity of inmates,
7.Dilapitated house or walls-affecting prosperity,
8.Staircase railings-sadness,
9.Pillars; Electric and telephone post-affecting females.

According to VASTURAJ VALLABH and BRAHUSANHITA these are called VEDH DOSHA. But in between the plot and obstacles if there is a public road, these deficiencies are nullified.

Similarly, if the distance between the obstacles and the house is two times the height of the house, these deficiencies will have no effect. For example, if the height of the house is 11 feet and if the obstructions are more than 22 feet away, Vedh Dosha vanishes.

SORROUNDINGS OF NEIGHBOURS

The surroundings of our neighbouring houses on all sides also affect us.

1.Rain water falling from the roofs of neighbours should not flow into our plot particularly from North or East direaction.

2.The affluent of neighbour should not flow into our plot.

3.In the North East side of the plot high-rise or tall buildings should not be there because such high rise buildings give rise to mental unrest. But if they are in South, South West or Western sides that will be auspicious to the buyer of the new plot or house.

4.In between two neighbouring big plots, a smaller plot should not be purchased. Similarly between two tall buildings, a small house should not be bought. This will make the buyer poorer day by day.

15. Turtle shaped plot = Causes to the owner and his family members imprisonment, untimely death and murders.

16. Window shaped plot (used for hand winnowing to separate grains from chaff) = The inmates of this plot lose mental peace and face poverty.

17. Bow shaped plot = Inmates of this plot face fear of theft, loot, attack by enemies etc.

18. Muslakar plot (long oval like plot with cut in one side) = It brings enmity and loss of friendship.

19. Hexagon shaped plot = This is considered good if all other Vastu principles are followed. Is said to be helpful in progress of family members.

20. Ellipitical plot (a regular oval shaped) = Loss in many ways like money, women and respect.

21. Polygonal plot (Panch Mukh) = Such plot should not be inhabited before making it a rectangular plot otherwise it will bring legal litigations and false allegations.

22. Octagonal (Astha Kon) plot = Is auspicious and will bring all round prosperity.

23. Pot type plot = People who live on this plot face problems and obstacles for progress.

24. Simha Mukh (lion faced) like a lion's face wider in front = Not good for residential purposes. Is very auspicious for business organisation.

25. Gaumukh (cow faced) like a cows face narrow in front = Auspicious provided the roads are in Southern and Westeren sides of plot.

Shape and size of the plot:

The best shapes for plots of land are square or rectangular, facing squarely on the four cardinal directions.
It is good if the plot is narrower at the entrance and wider at its rear, but the opposite is not good.
Round, oval, and triangular plots should be avoided. The house should not be built in the shape of a diamond, with the corner facing north. L-shaped plots are also inauspicious and should not be purchased.
If the land is cut in the corner this is not good. If possible the land to fill in the missing corner should be purchased. If the land is cut short on the northeast side it is very bad and is not auspicious; do not purchase it. It is like a headless body.
A land tilt of 20 degrees, off square by 20 degrees, is acceptable. If the plot is rectangular, it is better that the longer sides run north to south rather than west to east. The best properties are either square or rectangular. If the plot is not a perfect rectangle, it is best if at least the southwest and southeast sides of the land are at 90º angles from one another. The southwest side of the quadrilateral should definitely not be extended past the southeast side, even if that means giving away a portion of the plot. Land that extends past the northeast side of the quadrilateral, however, brings wealth, happiness, and good name. Land extending on the northeast side is very good. Extensions on any other side are inauspicious. Extensions of the northwest side will cause you to lose money and peace.

Home is our abode of love where we expect to enjoy the fruits of our labor. We expect to enjoy our peace & happiness, progress & prosperity, health & wealth and faith & spiritual development from our home. If its surroundings and construction are poor and the atmosphere eerie, we can neither be happy nor healthy. Hence to ensure that the house is built properly, in modern times we take the help of the professionals who can build a good house with a solid foundation, strong walls, a proper structural balance with the right weight and pressure distribution, proper plumbing, electricity, air light etc. This branch of modern knowledge is called architecture, or civil engineering.
The ancient seers of India knew not only the above, but quite a few other things beyond. Hence their house building principles included: the North-South flow of magnetic forces: the East-West earth motion and Solar energy forces: and with Divine Spiritual Perception, they also knew the various Deities who rule the different sections of the house and based on the Nature of the Deities, what type of room/function is ideal in that part of the house (Details given in the section Vastu Purusha Mandala). This branch of ancient Indian knowledge is called Vastu Sastra, or Vastu Shilpa sastra, or Vastu Nirmana sastra. It was employed to build not just houses but to plan and build entire towns and cities and temples.
During the last 10 years, first Vastu was in fashion, then it became a fad, then came fanaticism and now the society is full of blind beliefs. People with all kinds of false notions are rejecting excellent houses just because they are facing the west. The truth is that there is nothing against a west facing house in Vastu!! Self styled Vastu "expert consultants" are taking people for a ride.
The Vastu principles included: on which side(s) of the plot the road(s) should be, the size & shape of the plot, how far minimum away it should be from the public places, what type of plot/house should be there next to the house, the height-length-breath of the boundary & the rooms and their placement/function, the door & window placement etc. It makes the optimised ideal use of the magnetic, solar & spiritual forces and the five basic elements - Earth, Fire, Water, Air & Space. The principles are based on very practical reasons. For example if the East side boundary wall is too high one will not get enough sunlight.
Like any other ancient sastra, Vastu must also be understood, interpreted and implemented based on the changed socio-economic conditions. Take for example the rule "Bathroom should not be next to kitchen - fire and water must be away". This is because in those days the kitchen-fire was produced by burning either wood or coal and bathroom water source was a well. So this would dampen the fire wood/coal. In the modern kitchen, if you have a gas stove at one corner and a tap and sink at the other corner, its not going to take you to hell. Similarly the toilet in those days was an open space and for hygienic reasons used to be at the end of the house. But the modern toilets are ok to be attached to bed rooms.
In modern times, especially in cities, only a multi millionaire can follow all the Vastu rules. The rest 99%, especially the flat dwellers can only do the best adjustments. Vastu is like life where you want ideal parents, ideal brothers & sisters, ideal teachers & education, ideal job & money, ideal wife & children and ideal health. This is rarely possible and hence you have to live with and make the best of what you get.
The following pages will give you the authentic Vastu principles. Read them and you can understand Vastu. At least no one can take you for a ride.
One final word. At the time of entering a new house if you get a vastu shanti pooja done, which is part of the Griha Pravesh pooja, it takes care of the Vastu doshas. Vastu cannot adversely affect the house where God is regularly worshiped with pooja, stotra path or mantra japa. Keeping a Vastu Ganesha at the Pooja place is another antidote to all Vastu Doshas. For the past 3 years I have been living in a flat where every thing is totally wrong according to Vastu but this house has given me more peace, prosperity, fame and money than all the other "good Vastu" houses. And mind you, I am going through the peak of my sadesati and Rahu antardasa!
God power is always stronger than Vastu power.

Unchain & Unshackle Saraswati - The Goddess of Learning!

1. The Goddess of Learning needs to be unchained!
If India has to become a Dynamic and Powerful Nation in the future, the Goddess of learning, 'Saraswati' will have to be deregulated and unchained, like the Goddess of wealth 'Lakshmi' was in 1991.

2. Profit making in all areas excepting Higher, Medical & Technical Education. WHY?
After 1991, it is free to make any amount of profit in any of the following sectors of the economy:-
1. Whiskey, Rum, Gin, Vodka, Brandy, Beer & Wine
2. Cigarettes, Cigars, 'Bidis', Gutka, Tobacco, Pan Masala andLottery business
3. Tuition Classes, Coaching Classes, I.T. & Software Training &Coaching Classes

3. After 60 years of Independance, Government is finding it difficult even to finance Primary & Secondary Education, but wants to control H&TE! WHY?
Even the Right to Education Bill has still not been passed!
The present expenditure on education by the centre and states is Rs.91,000 cr.
Education Cess collects another Rs.7000 Cr. (Total 3.32% of GDP).
Private initiatives in the field of education is estimated to be another 4.7% of GDP and includes overseas education + Capitation Fees + Tuition + Coaching + unaided schools and colleges + I.T. training and coaching classes.
Private initiative benefits mostly the 30% urban population of India.
It is estimated that the Central & State Governments require additional Rs. 100,000 cr. per year for funding Primary and Secondary education to reach attendance of 100% for primary and at least up to class 10th.
Additional Rs. 100,000 cr. per year is required for Vocational Education & Training.
This may be shared with business & trade on a 1:3 basis between Governments: Business. Education should be considered as an investment for the Nation and not as a cost.

The spin offs are multifold in Human development as well as Nation building.

4. Make India an International Hub for Higher & Technical Education (H&TE)
India has the advantage of a PPP, purchasing power parity of about Rs10 = US$ 1.
Countries like tiny Singapore (population 4.5m) are planning to have 150,000 foreign students.
Australia (population 22m) has nearly 400,000 foreign students and earns about A$12 billion per year!
India (population 1100m) has about 27,700 foreign students and has NO PLANS for any regulated increase, because of 'Licence Raj' in H&TE.
Lack of Adequate apacity in Indian Educational Institutions and Low Quality encourage 1.2 to 1.6 lacs Indian students to leave India every year for foreign universities resulting in a foreign outflow of about Rs.50,000 Cr. per year.
Assume 50% for 2-year masters & 50% for 4-year under-graduate course, at any given time 3.6 to 4.6 lacs Indian students. Some leave as tourists.
Sufficient to build 40 IIM's or 20 IIT's per year!
The RBI figures indicate only about Rs. 20,000 Cr. per year funding from in India. Many Indian students may be supported by overseas NRI's, PIO's, friends and associates who pay directly for Indian students studying abroad.
If H&TE was deregulated, like I.T.,
there is no reason why India would not earn US$ 20 to US$40 billion per year and provide at least 10 to 20 million additional jobs in the field of education alone!
The spin-offs in tourism, joint ventures and trade with other countries will be enormous.
Let us give a level playing field to Indian Institutions before we open up the education sector to foreign players as per WTO & GATT.

5. Higher, Medical & Technical Education needs Deregulation & Decontrol for Innovation, better Quality, Lower Cost & Excellence!
If Indian education has to achieve excellence, quality, innovation and cutting edge R&D the first step would be to deregulate and unchain the Goddess of Learning.
Competition will induct quality, lower cost, innovation and excellence.
Capitation fees will vanish once H&TE is decontrolled & 'Licence Raj' is scrapped.
Overall fees will reduce!
Poor students could get highly subsidized education.
Deserving poor students would get scholarships and loans!
Student bank loans are only Rs. 12,000Cr.
at present;
this has a scope to go up to more than Rs. 100,000 Cr.
once the quality of education improves within the country, inline with International standards. Credibility of Institutions will go up.
India requires additional 25,000 PhD's per year, the present structure cannot deliver.
R&D in India is suffering!

साहिब तेरी साहिबी सब घट रही समाय

मैं कौन हूं, मेरा अस्तित्व क्या है, ये संसार क्या है, ईश्वर क्या है-
ऐसे अनेक प्रश्न विचारवानव्यक्ति को नाना प्रकार से उद्विग्न और उद्वेलित करते हैं। भारतीय चिंतन धारा में इन प्रश्नों पर अनेक प्रकार से विचार हुआ है। शंकराचार्य ने तो कहा भी है कि ऐसे प्रश्नों पर विवेकशील पुरुष को अवश्य विचार करना चाहिए।

मैं कौन हूं?
इस प्रश्न पर चर्चा करते हुए शंकराचार्य कहते हैं मैं मनुष्य, देव, यक्ष आदि कुछ भी नहीं हूं। ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य, शूद्र आदि वर्णवालाभी नहीं हूं तथा ब्रह्मचारी, गृहस्थ, वानप्रस्थ या संन्यासी भी नहीं हूं। यह सभी तो देह का धर्म है और मैं देह से भिन्न बोधरूपयानी ज्ञान स्वरूप आत्मा हूं। तो फिर मेरा अस्तित्व क्या है? इस प्रश्न का उत्तर शंकराचार्य ने कुछ इस प्रकार दिया है मैं देह नहीं हूं, मैं ज्ञानेन्द्रिय या कर्मेन्द्रियभी नहीं हूं। मैं अहंकार, पंचप्राण या बुद्धि आदि अन्त:करण चतुष्टय भी नहीं हूं, मैं तो केवल नित्य और शिवस्वरूपआत्मा हूं। आत्मा के संबंध में तो अनेक बार विचार हुआ है। गीता में इसके अविनाशी स्वरूप का वर्णन करते हुए कहा गया है कि आत्मा किसी काल में भी न तो जन्म लेती है और न ही मरती है, क्योंकि यह अजन्मा, नित्य, सनातन और पुरातन है। शरीर के नष्ट होने पर भी यह नष्ट नहीं होती। युद्ध क्षेत्र में अवसादग्रस्तअर्जुन की शंकाओं का निवारण करते हुए श्री कृष्ण ने कहा था कि न तो ऐसा ही है कि मैं किसी काल में नहीं था या तू नहीं था अथवा ये राजा लोग नहीं थे। न ऐसा ही है कि इससे आगे हम सब नहीं रहेंगे।

अर्थात देह के न रहने पर भी आत्मा रहती है। देह को नष्ट होने से बचाया नहीं जा सकता और आत्मा को नष्ट किया नहीं जा सकता। इन दोनों का संयोग ही जीवन के रूप में प्रस्फुटित होता है तो फिर हम जीवन की छोटी सी अवधि में ऐसे कार्य क्यों करें कि जीवन ही लांछित हो जाए! आत्मा सर्वव्यापक शांत-शीतल, सुख-दु:ख और विकार से रहित है, परंतु शरीर में तो विकार है। यही विकार हमें जगत में भी दिखाई देते हैं और अशांति उत्पन्न करते हैं।
यही कारण है कि ऋषियों द्वारा इन विकारों से जगत की मुक्ति के लिए प्रार्थना भी की गई है-

सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिन:सर्वे सन्तुनिरामया:।सर्वे भद्राणिपश्यन्तुमा कश्चिद्दु:खभागभवेत॥

अर्थात् सब सुखी हों, निरामय हों, सभी का कल्याण हो, दु:ख का भाग किसी को न मिले। अब प्रश्न उठता है कि वो कौन सी सत्ता है जो अदृश्य रहकर भी दृश्य जगत का संचालन करती है? कबीर ने अत्यंत सरल भाव से इसका उत्तर देते हुए कहा है साहिब तेरी साहिबी,सब घट रही समाय। साहिब का यही अंश जीवन और जगत को चलायमान रखता है। उसे रचता, नियंत्रित करता है और उसका विध्वंस करता है। पर यह साहिब कौन है जो बिनु पद चलैसुनैबिनुकाना। कर बिनुकर्म करैबिधिनाना।। कबीर ने माना है कि यह निर्गुण और निराकार ब्रह्म ही संसार का खेवनहार है। पर इसे निराकार मान लेने से मन कैसे स्थिर हो-यह एक विकट प्रश्न है। आराधना में साहिब का चिंतन किस प्रकार किया जाए। श्रीमद्भागवत में इस शंका का निवारण किया गया है। श्रीकृष्ण सब आत्माओं के आत्मा-परमात्मा हैं। केवल जगत कल्याण के लिए ही योग माया के आश्रय से वे रूपधारीकी तरह दिखते हैं।

अर्थात् निर्गुण होते हुए भी ब्रह्म, सगुण रूप में उत्पन्न होता है। यही सगुण रूप जब पुन:परब्रह्म के विराट स्वरूप में विलीन हो जाता है तो पुन:निराकार हो जाता है। गोस्वामी तुलसीदास ने भी सगुण और निर्गुण के मतांतर को अस्वीकाराहै। इसलिए स्वरूप के आधार पर उपासना भेद से भ्रमित नहीं होना चाहिए, क्योंकि कोई भी साकार स्वरूप अंतत:उसके विराट रूप में विलीन होकर निराकार ही हो जाता है। भारतीय चिंतन पद्धति में नाम के जाप को ईश्वर की आराधना का एक सर्वमान्य एवं सरल उपाय माना गया है। कठोपनिषदमें तो सगुण और निर्गुण की शंका का समाधान अत्यंत विचारपूर्वक किया गया है ऊंकार अक्षर ही सगुण ब्रह्म है, यह अक्षर ही निर्गुण परमब्रह्मभी है। इसी प्रकार गीता में भी ॐ की महत्ता प्रतिपादित हुई है। धु्रव जी के वन जाते समय नारद जी ने भी उन्हें ॐ नमोभगवतेवासुदेवायमंत्र का जप और ध्यान करने का ही आदेश दिया था। राम-नाम की महिमा तो सर्वविदित है ही। विद्वानों का मत है कि ब्रह्म के नाम में उसके सभी गुण उसी प्रकार छुपे रहते हैं जैसे बीज में वृक्ष। इसीलिए नाम-जाप का महत्व सदा से बना हुआ है। वास्तव में जीवन और जगत से जुडा कोई भी प्रश्न हमारी प्राचीन चिंतनधारा में अनुत्तरित नहीं है। हमारी शंकाओं का निवारण हमारे प्राचीन ग्रंथों में विस्तार से किया गया है।

पीछे देखकर हम आगे बढ सकते हैं। यही इतिहास-दृष्टि भी है। परंतु इसके विपरीत, भौतिकवादी संस्कृति के प्रभाव में आज हमारा समाज अपनी चिंतन परंपरा से विमुख होकर विकारों से भर गया है। विकारी मनुष्यों के बढते महत्व की होड में विचारवानव्यक्ति की आस्था भी डगमगा रही है। हम विकार के विनाशी मकडजाल में फंस चुके हैं। इस जाल से मुक्ति का एक ही उपाय है कि हम एक बार फिर भारतीय चिंतनधारा के शाश्वत प्रश्नों से साक्षात्कार करें और जीवन और जगत के सत्य को समझने का प्रयास करें। कबीर ने अत्यंत सरल स्वभाव से इस जगत के रहस्य को सुलझाते हुए कहा है कि यह संसार कागज की पुडिया के समान है, जिस पर पानी की बूंद पडते ही सब कुछ समाप्त हो जाएगा। इसलिए हमें जो भी करना है पानी की बूंद पडने से पहले ही करना होगा।

आधुनिक युग में हर व्यक्ति बेहतर भविष्य, सामाजिक प्रतिष्ठा एवं अच्छे करियर की प्राप्ति की दिशा में सदा प्रयासरत रहता है। हर व्यक्ति अपनी शिक्षा, आर्थिक स्थिति एवं शारीरिक साम‌र्थ्य के अनुसार अपने करियर के प्रति जागरूक एवं प्रयत्नशील रहता है। कुछ समय पहले तक करियर शब्द का सीमित अर्थो में ही प्रयोग किया जाता रहा है, जैसे कि शिक्षा प्राप्ति के बाद अपने-अपने भविष्य के लक्ष्य की प्राप्ति के लिए एक शैक्षिक स्तर पर उच्च शिक्षा को कुछ इस प्रकार योजनाबद्ध तरीके से व्यवस्थित करना, जिससे कि हमारी युवा पीढी अच्छा धनोपार्जन करके समाज में सम्मानजनक ढंग से जीवन व्यतीत कर सके। परंतु आज आधुनिक युग में करियर शब्द को किसी विशेष आयु वर्ग से बांधना न तो संभव है, न ही तर्कसंगत क्योंकि करियर एक व्यापक शब्द है व इसे प्रत्येक आयु एवं सामाजिक स्तर के साथ जोड कर देखा जाना चाहिए। अपने पूरे परिवार के करियर को उज्जवल बनाने के लिए किए जाने वाले विभिन्न प्रयत्नों के साथ यदि घर को व्यवस्थित करने में वास्तुशास्त्र के आधारभूत नियमों का भी रखा जाए तो इससे भविष्य को संवारने में काफी मदद मिल सकती है।

वास्तुशास्त्र में किसी भी मकान या कमरे की उत्तर दिशा को करियर से सम्बद्ध दिशा माना गया है। इसके साथ ही जीवन की बेहतरी का संबंध भवन की पूर्व दिशा से है। ज्ञान एवं बौद्धिक विकास में सहायक ग्रह गुरु, यानी बृहस्पति की दिशा है-पूर्वोत्तर। इस दिशा में ईशान कोण स्थित होता है। वास्तु की दृष्टि से यदि आप अपने मकान या व्यावसायिक प्रतिष्ठान की इन तीनों दिशाओं से संबंधित कुछ बातों का थोडा भी ध्यान रखें तो वह आपके लिए बहुत कल्याणकारी सिद्ध हो सकता है।

1. घर की उत्तर दिशा की सफाई का विशेष ध्यान रखें व वहां कोई कूडा-कचरा, डस्टबिन, शू-रैक आदि न रखें।

2. पढते-लिखते समय सदा उत्तर या पूर्व दिशा की ओर मुख करके बैठें।

3. प्रतियोगिता परीक्षा की तैयारी करते समय भी इन्हीं दिशाओं में अपना मुख करके पढाई करना चाहिए। इसके लिए आपको अपनी स्टडी टेबल की सेटिंग भी ठीक करनी पडेगी।

4. रोज प्रात: बिस्तर से उठकर सबसे पहले घर की उत्तर एवं पूर्व की दिशाओं की खिडकियां व दरवाजे खोलें।

5. घर की उत्तर दिशा की लॉबी या बैलकनी में एक सुंदर-सा छोटा वॉटर फाउंटेन रखें व इसे रोज सुबह एक-दो घंटे तक जरूर चलाएं।

6. उत्तर दिशा को बेहतर करियर के उद्देश्य से प्रभावशाली बनाने के लिए िफश एक्वेरियम का भी प्रयोग किया जा सकता है। इसमें एक समय में कम से कम नौ की संख्या में गोल्ड फिश होनी चाहिए, जिनमें से कम से कम एक काले रंग की भी होनी चाहिए।

7. यदि स्थान या साधन की कोई मजबूरी हो तो आर्टिफिशियल िफश एक्वेरियम का प्रयोग करना भी करियर में सहायक होता है।

8. यदि घर की उत्तर दिशा में कोई फिश एक्वेरियम या वॉटर-फाउंटेन लगाना संभव न हो तो दीवार पर जल का चित्र या दृश्य भी लगाया जा सकता है। परंतु अच्छा यह होगा कि चित्र में लगातार बहता हुआ जल ही प्रदर्शित किया गया हो, जैसे पहाडी झरना, नदी, सागर तट की लहरें, फव्वारा आदि। यहां रुके जल के चित्र नहीं लगाने चाहिए। जैसे- तालाब, कुआं, जोहड आदि।

9. उत्तर दिशा के साथ तालमेल रखने वाले नीले रंग का प्रयोग इस दिशा में स्थित कमरों की दीवारों पर करवाएं। इससे परिवार के सदस्यों की सकारात्मक ऊर्जा में वृद्धि होती है व यह सभी के जीवन में करियर व रोजगार के उत्तम साधन लाता है। यह प्रयोग के पहले से चलते हुए व्यवसाय या करियर में भी लाभ दिलाता है व परिवार के अन्य सदस्यों का भविष्य उज्जवल करता है।
